Matching Sedation to the Procedure
Whether simple or complex, the procedure you need gives us our starting point. A conversation with you leads us to the best solution.

One of the most common questions I hear is a practical one: "Which kind of sedation do I need?" First, let's be clear: you may not need sedation at all. Either gentle techniques, local anesthesia, or both keep nearly every procedure we provide comfortable and essentially pain-free, but we absolutely understand that for some patients, that's not enough for peace of mind. Your relationship with dentistry is personal, and if a routine cleaning makes you feel uneasy, you can trust there will be no judgment from us. We just want you to get the care you need to maintain outstanding oral health, and if sedation is what will make that possible, we're ready to customize your experience.
We offer both nitrous oxide and IV sedation, and patients naturally want to know which one goes with the procedure they're facing. It's a fair question, and the answer is refreshingly simple once you know how I think about it.
The choice really comes down to two things: what we're doing that day, and how much of it you'd like to be present for. The procedure points us to a natural starting place. Your comfort makes the final call.
Your Two Options
Nitrous or IV: What Each One Is For
We keep two tools on the table, and they do genuinely different jobs. Here's the quick version before we match them to specific procedures. (For the full picture of how each works and who's a candidate, see our sedation dentistry page.)
Light & Quick
Nitrous Oxide
Takes the edge off while you stay fully awake and in control. It settles in within moments and clears just as fast, so there's no grogginess and no driver to arrange.
Best for routine visits and everyday nerves.
Deep & Unaware
IV Sedation
For any procedure you'd simply rather not remember. We keep you deeply relaxed and adjust your comfort moment to moment, and most patients recall very little afterward.
Best when you'd rather not be present for it.
The Quick Answer
Which Sedation Fits Which Procedure
Here's how the two typically line up with the work we do. Think of this as a starting point, not a rulebook. The procedure suggests a natural fit; if you'd prefer to be more relaxed than the "typical" column suggests, we simply move up.
| Procedure | Typical Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Routine cleaning | Nitrous | Calms you down while you stay aware and in control. |
| Fillings | Nitrous | Short and straightforward, so light sedation is usually all you need. |
| Crowns | Nitrous | Comfortable with nitrous; step up to IV if you'd rather be unaware. |
| Root canals | IV Sedation | Often the visit people most want to sleep straight through. |
| Extractions & oral surgery | IV Sedation | Deep relaxation for surgical work you'd rather not remember. |
| Veneers & cosmetic work | IV Sedation | Longer cosmetic visits pass in what feels like minutes. |
| Full mouth reconstruction | IV Sedation | The smoothest way through a multi-step restorative visit. |
| Dental implants | IV Sedation | A calm, unaware experience while we place your implants. |
You'll notice a pattern: nitrous suits the shorter, routine visits, and IV sedation is the answer whenever you'd prefer to experience as little of the appointment as possible. That's really the whole logic. IV isn't reserved for the "big" cases; it's for any procedure, large or small, that you'd rather move through without the stress.
"The procedure suggests a starting point. Your comfort makes the final call."
The Deciding Factor
When Your Comfort Overrides the Chart
Every person is different in how they feel about dental care, and I take that seriously. If a cleaning fills you with genuine dread, there is nothing unusual about choosing IV sedation for it. Sure, the chart above says "nitrous," but your peace of mind outranks the chart every time. In the other direction, some patients breeze through a longer visit with nothing more than nitrous. There's no wrong answer, and no judgment either way.
So the honest short answer to "which one do I need?" is this: let the procedure suggest a starting point, then tell me how you'd like to feel. Between the two of us, we'll land on the right level of comfort for you specifically.
Before You Come In
A Quick Note on Planning
The two options ask slightly different things of your day. With nitrous, there's nothing to arrange because it clears in minutes and you drive yourself home. With IV sedation, you'll follow a few simple pre-appointment instructions and bring someone to drive you. A little planning is all it takes:

None of it is complicated. It's just the difference between a day that feels chaotic and one that feels handled. "Handled" is exactly the feeling I want you leaving with.
